Donjon de Brionne

Stop off in Brionne, a small Norman town nestling on the banks of the Risle.
Although Brionne, a pretty village in the Eure region, was not spared by the Second World War, it has nonetheless retained some of its rich architectural heritage: the churches of Saint Martin and Sainte Mère de Dieu, the Lorraine estate, and the keep which overlooks the town and dominates the valley.

In all likelihood, Brionne's keep was erected at the end of the 11th century. Built on a square plan, its walls are around 1 m thick at the base, but thicker at the corners and sides, where the flat outer buttresses are located.
Only the south façade is relatively well preserved. The town of Brionne undertook consolidation work on the building between 1994 and 1996.
The keep is accessible and visible all year round, as it lies on the route of the GR224 hiking trail.
