Ancienne Abbaye Notre Dame de Grestain

Notre-Dame de Grestain Abbey was founded in 1050 by Herluin de Conteville, husband of Herleva, widow of Duke Robert the Magnificent and mother of William the Conqueror. Both are buried there. William had a personal attachment to this family abbey as he cherished his mother. Located 7 km (4 miles) away from Honfleur within an unspoilt nature site, this almost concealed place is set in beautiful parkland where a small stream with healing water runs. You will see the splendid 12th century medieval room, called the "Chaplain's house" built in 1757 after the destruction of the abbey church, the long stone barn, the chapel and the remarkable surrounding wall. Open to visitors year round (free), the abbey has a packed programme of theatre and reading events.
