Gravier de Gargantua
Le gravier de Gargantua is a menhir located in the commune of Port-Mort, at the entrance to the village coming from Gaillon or Les Andelys.
But why Gargantua?
Various legends attribute the appearance of this menhir to the giant Gargantua:
In 1830, Auguste Le Prévost recounts that Gargantua was building the "Côte Frileuse" when he felt a pebble in his shoe. He decided to remove it and threw it far behind him. The stone fell where it stands today.
Then, in 1879, Pulligny's account told a different story. According to him, the two giants, Gargantua and Grandgousier, were near Mantes-la Jolie. They stole horses and fled along the Seine towards Les Andelys. But when they reached Port-Mort, Gargantua sat on the side of the road and felt something in his shoe. He pulled out a stone and set it aside.
