La Tour des Archives
The Tour des Archives is the most spectacular vestige of the fortified castle built by Philippe-Auguste at the end of the 12th century to defend the royal domain. It housed the archives of Vernon's notaries.
You have to climb 102 steps to reach the top of the 22-metre-high keep. The walled opening on the right, at first-floor level and above the two corbels, was the original entrance. A drawbridge linked the rampart walkway to the tower, which was isolated at the time. The Tour des Farines occupies one of the corners of the Jardin des Arts, at the other end of the rampart. This small tower features a ground-floor room; a staircase in the wall leads to a second vaulted room.
