In the heart of the Chambray estate, discover this magnificent 4,440 m² vegetable garden enclosed by 19th century walls. You'll find fruit, vegetables and aromatic plants of current varieties, ancient Norman varieties and exotic plants.
In 1850, the Marquis de Chambray, Georges de Chambray, wrote a treatise on the cultivation of melon on sour soil. Among the melon varieties named was the Honfleur melon, which he grew in the frames of his kitchen garden at Chambray. This is how the CREE began to take an interest in old Norman vegetable varieties such as the Honfleur melon and some twenty other varieties: the Saint Saëns cabbage, which can weigh up to 18 kilos, a superb crisp lettuce, the "Brune du perche", a potato with a beautiful blue color, the "bleue de la Manche", the aptly-named crotte de lièvre pea, or a curious bean with a square seed, the "petit carré de Caen".
Growing these varieties not only encourages visitors to cultivate them themselves and preserve Normandy's plant heritage, it also helps to promote vegetables such as pulses and cabbages, which used to keep well in winter, without the need for energy. There are two ways to visit the kitchen garden:
* self-guided tour
* guided tours
During your visit, you'll chat with an enthusiastic guide who will introduce you to the aromatic and medicinal plants, edible flowers, fruit and vegetables of yesterday and today, as you wander through the flower-filled paths of this eternal garden.
A wifi and QR code system has been set up to offer three independent games for ages 8 and up.
Workshops and events are offered for adults and children according to a calendar available on the CREE Chambray website.
